Video Views on Instagram: How Instagram Counts a View

Video views on Instagram count plays, not people. For Reels, Instagram counts a view each time the video starts to play or replay. One person watching three times adds three views. The number of different people is a separate figure called viewers. Here is how each count works and where to find it.

What Counts as a View on Instagram?

Quick answer: A view on Instagram is one play or one display of your content. For a Reel or video, Instagram counts a view each time it starts to play or replay. For a photo or carousel post, a view is each time it is shown on someone's screen.

Instagram now uses "views" as one shared number across every kind of content. Its Help Center defines it in one line: views are the number of times your content was played or displayed. Content here means Reels, posts, Stories, Live videos and ads.

Meta's developer documentation for Instagram uses the same idea. It describes views as the total number of times a piece of media has been played on Instagram. So for any video, think "plays". Every start of the video is one more view.

This replaced older words you still see in some guides, such as "impressions" and "plays". Meta's developer documentation says the impressions number is no longer available for media created after 2 July 2024.

Do Replays Count as Views on Instagram?

Quick answer: Yes. In your insights, a Reel view is counted each time the Reel starts to play or replay. If one person watches your Reel three times, the views go up by three. That is why views are almost always higher than viewers.

This is the part most people miss. Views measure plays, so the same account can add many views. A short Reel that loops on screen can rack up replays fast.

Stories work the same way. Instagram's Help Center says the Story view number includes all the replays. That is why your Story can show more views than usernames in the viewer list.

If you want to know how many different people watched, look at viewers instead. It counts each account once.

Plays, Views and Viewers: Three Different Numbers

Quick answer: Your Reel has three counts. The Reels tab shows plays, which leave out replays. Insights shows views, which include replays. Insights also shows viewers, the number of different accounts that saw the Reel at least once.

NumberWhat Instagram says it countsReplays included?Where you see it
PlaysHow many times your Reel starts to playNoBottom left of each Reel on your Reels tab
ViewsHow many times your Reel starts to play or replayYesView insights on the Reel
ViewersDifferent accounts that saw it on screen at least once, played or notCounts each account onceView insights on the Reel
Watch timeTotal time the Reel was played, replays includedYesView insights on the Reel

Instagram marks viewers as an estimate that is still being developed. So small differences between screens are normal.

Average watch time has its own rule. Instagram works it out as total watch time divided by initial views. An initial view is the first time your Reel starts to play in a viewing session.

Reel Views vs Feed Video Views vs Post Views

Quick answer: Reels and videos count a view when the video plays. Photo and carousel posts count a view when the post is displayed. A video inside a carousel with several photos and videos does not show its own video view count.

  • Reels. Views are plays and replays. The Reel link contains /reel/.
  • Feed videos. A video post also shows a view count under it. Tap that count to see the likes and who liked it. The post link contains /p/.
  • Photo and carousel posts. Instagram's post insights define views as the number of times your content was displayed.
  • Carousels with a video. Instagram says you cannot see the video view number when the video is part of a post with several photos and videos.

Only plays inside the Instagram app count. Instagram's Help Center says video views do not include views from an embedded post on a website or from a computer.

Do Your Own Views Count, and Is There a Minimum Watch Time?

Quick answer: Instagram does not publish a rule on either. It says a Reel view counts when the Reel starts to play, and it names no minimum number of seconds. It also does not say whether your own plays are counted, so do not rely on them.

You will find many guides that claim "3 seconds" or "your own views never count". We checked the Instagram Help Center and Meta's developer documentation, and neither gives a number of seconds or a rule about your own plays. What Instagram does say is that a view is counted when the Reel starts to play.

Our advice: do not spend time replaying your own Reel. A few plays change little anyway. Share it to your Story, pin it, and send it to friends who will enjoy it. More tips are in our guide section on why Reel views stop increasing.

Where to See Video Views on Instagram

Quick answer: Open your profile and tap the Reels tab to see plays on each Reel. Tap a Reel or post and choose View insights for views, viewers and watch time. Insights need a public account and stay available for up to two years.

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. For Reels, tap the Reels tab. The play count sits in the bottom left of each Reel.
  3. Tap the Reel or post you want to check.
  4. Tap View insights for views, viewers, watch time and follows.

For trends across all your content, open your dashboard from your profile. Instagram says dashboards are available to all public accounts. You can pick a time range within the past 90 days.

Want to know who those viewers are? Instagram does not show names for Reels, videos or posts. Our guide can you see who views your Instagram Reels explains what you can and cannot see.

Why Your Video Views Are Not Showing

Quick answer: New views take a little time to appear. Views from embedded posts and from computers do not count. Videos inside a mixed carousel show no video view count. Private accounts can see no count until the video passes a certain number of views.

Instagram's Help Center lists these reasons a video view count is missing or low:

  • The count is delayed. It can take some time before a view shows up. Check back later.
  • The video is in a mixed carousel. A post with several photos and videos does not show a video view number.
  • The plays were outside the app. Embedded posts and views on a computer do not add to video views.
  • The account is private. Sometimes the count stays hidden until the video reaches a certain number of views.
  • The video is very old. View counts only show on videos added after 19 November 2015.

If your count is there but not growing, the cause is usually the video itself: a slow first two seconds or poor timing. See why Reel views stop increasing.

Can You Hide Video Views on Instagram?

Quick answer: Yes. A professional account can hide view counts on its Reels tab in settings. You can also hide like and view counts on a single post before you share it. Hidden views still count; only the public number is hidden.

For a professional (business or creator) account, Instagram's steps are: go to your profile, tap More, then Account type and tools, then Other, then View counts on profile, and switch Hide view counts on. With it off, anyone can see view counts on your Reels tab.

For one post, tap More options before you share it and switch on Hide like counts on this post. Instagram says this controls whether others see the like and view counts on that post.

How a Views Boost Shows Up in Your Count

Quick answer: A ViewsBoostly boost adds views to the one public Reel, video or post you link. The views appear in the same public view count your visitors see. Your followers, likes and settings stay as they are.

Because a view counts as a play, a boost raises the public view count on that post. It starts 2–5 minutes after payment and runs at a steady pace. The views are non-drop, and we never ask for your password.

Give your video a stronger count. 1,000 views cost $2.99.
